Concept
While walking through the streets of Tokyo to research my solo exhibition, I came across a sign that had peeled back. I learned that, as the city changes, signs are regularly updated by pasting new maps over the old ones. Due to wear and tear over the years, the layers of maps had peeled away, revealing maps from several years—or even a decade or more—ago. I realized that while the location indicated on that map was certainly “here,” it was a “here” on a different timeline—one that wasn’t quite this present moment. This work uses a green screen as its backing. A green screen is a device used in video production and online meetings to “display what is needed” while simultaneously “erasing what is unnecessary.” In this series, the very device intended to erase the background is, in fact, highlighting what is being “erased.”
